2019 Southeast Collegiate Prospect Showcase

Tom Sox to Send Three Players, Coach to Prospect Showcase

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Valley Baseball League today (July 11) announced the rosters for the third annual prospect showcase in Cary, North Carolina, taking place on July 15 and 16. Three Tom Sox players were selected to represent the Valley Baseball League in the event:

  • East Carolina’s Thomas Francisco will represent the league as a third baseman. Francisco is currently batting a team-leading .460 with 29 hits, 17 RBI, and 13 runs scored, and is sporting a 15-game hit streak, two games short of tying the team record set in 2016.

  • Florida’s Devin Hemenway will represent the league as a pitcher. Through five appearances (four starts), the Gators hurler is tossing to a 1.00 ERA in 18 innings, allowing just two earned runs and has struck out 14.

  • Elon’s Joe Sprake will represent the league as a pitcher. Through five appearances, the Phoenix is sporting a 4.50 ERA in 16 innings, allowing eight earned runs (five of which came in his last appearance) and striking out 20.

Additionally, pitching coach Connor Kaden (Wake Forest) will act as an assistant coach for the Valley Baseball League team.

This season continues the Tom Sox’s trend of sporting high numbers on the 25-man roster, as five were selected last season (only two could participate) and six were selected in 2017 (only four could participate).

The showcase will take place at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, and will feature teams from the Valley League, Southern League, Cal Ripken League, Florida League, and Sunbelt League.

The Valley League is scheduled to play the Southern League at 4 p.m. on Monday, and the Florida League at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. A bio capture, athletic assessment, and vision screen will be made available to team members during off times.

The Valley League has historically done well at the Showcase; the VBL has not lost (but tied once) in the first two years of the mini-tournament.
