LUMBERJACKS USE THREE BIG INNINGS TO DEFEAT TOM SOX 12-9, FORCE RUBBER MATCH
COVINGTON, Va. – In a game of many ups and downs, the Charlottesville Tom Sox fell to the Covington Lumberjacks by a score of 12-9. With their victory, Covington evened the series at 1-1.
Charlottesville struck first in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead after an RBI double by Trey McDyre (Liberty) scored Cayman Richardson (Virginia). The Tom Sox then extended their lead to 2-0 in the inning off an RBI groundout by Austin Mueller (IUP).
Covington got on the board and responded to the Tom Sox’s fast start with a big second inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead off of an RBI bloop single and a two-run double. The Lumberjacks added to that lead in the following inning with an RBI single to make the score 4-2 through three innings of play.
The Tom Sox countered in the fifth inning with a big 3-run inning of their own to secure a 5-4 lead following an RBI single by Christian Hlinka (Virginia) and a two-run single by Dan Harwood (Wooster).
Starting in the fifth inning, Covington went on to score at least one run in four consecutive innings to take a commanding 12-5 lead.
Charlottesville would not go down without a fight. In the ninth inning, Mueller reached first base and the ‘Sox scored two runs in the process off of a Covington error to cut the Lumberjack lead to 12-7. Brock Edge (Florida) then brought home two more Tom Sox runners with a two-run double to make it 12-9. The Tom Sox rally fell short, however, after leaving runners stranded on second and third to end the game.
The decisive game three of the series will be played at C-VILLE Weekly Ballpark on Tuesday (7/30) with the first pitch at 7 p.m.
