FRONT ROYAL, Va. – The Charlottesville Tom Sox defeated the Front Royal Cardinals 2-1 to start a new two-game winning streak.

Michael Zubovich (Randolph-Macon) started off strong, holding the Cardinals scoreless for the first three innings. He finished with nine total K’s in his four total innings.

After three innings of scoreless work, the Front Royal Cardinals made their first play of the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth.

Carson Skipper (Auburn) headed to the mound in the top of the fifth for his Tom Sox debut and made a great first impression, holding the Cardinals scoreless for two innings.

Another Auburn player, Devin Warner, came out swinging and got his first career hit in what was also his Tom Sox debut.

Both the Tom Sox and Cardinals faced mid-game slumps and posted scoreless fifth and sixth innings.

The Tom Sox brought back the energy in the seventh inning when Thomas Francisco (East Carolina) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1. Shortly after, Dan Harwood (Wooster) hit an RBI double off the wall in center to give the Tom Sox the lead.

Alaska Abney (Coastal Carolina) hit the mound in the bottom of the seventh and finished the game off for the ‘Sox. He managed to hold the Cardinals scoreless for the final three frames, finishing with six strikeouts.

While tonight’s matchup did not see many runs, 17 total strikeouts were achieved through the work of Zubovich, Skipper, and Abney.

The Tom Sox are back in action at 7 PM tomorrow night (July 1) vs. the Waynesboro Generals at C-VILLE Weekly Ballpark.
