STRASBURG, Va. – The Strasburg Express managed to snap the Tom Sox’s four-game win streak with an 8-5 win. Despite the loss, Thomas Francisco (East Carolina) made Tom Sox history with a 3-run home run to break the team’s all-time hit streak record of 17 straight games. Additionally, Cayman Richardson (Virginia) extended his own hit streak to eight games. In his last night for the Tom Sox, In his last night with the Tom Sox, Kirby McMullen saw action on both the mound and at the plate, going 2-for-3 at the plate and tossing 2.2 innings on the mound, striking out three.
While Charlottesville got out to a slow start, Strasburg came out hot and put five runs on the board in the first two innings.
The Tom Sox came into the third inning ready to strike back. Richardson and Kirby McMullen (Florida) could be found on first and second with Francisco ready to bat and break a Tom Sox record. His 3-run home run got things started for the ‘Sox and brought the score to 5-3.
Strasburg managed to tack on 2 more in the fourth and fifth innings while the Sox remained quiet. Ramon Garza (Cornell) broke the silence and hit his first home run of the season in the top of the seventh. Strasburg matched the ‘Sox with a home run in the bottom of the seventh to bring the score to 8-4.
In the top of the seventh, Christian Hlinka (Virginia) hit a double and scored off a passed ball. Hlinka reached base a remarkable four times tonight. In the bottom of the frame, Sam Crawford hit the mound as a reliever and held Strasburg scoreless.
The Tom Sox look to come back on Tuesday night in Purcellville (7/16) in order to sweep the season series with the Cannons.
