The Waynesboro Generals used three big innings to take down the Charlottesville Tom Sox by a score of 10-4. Thomas Francisco (ECU) failed to get a hit for the first time this season, putting an end to his 23-game hit-streak.
Waynesboro clinched the VBL South Division regular season title with the win. The Tom Sox will be the number two-seed in the upcoming divisional playoffs.
The Generals jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first scoring, three runs off four hits. The Tom Sox rallied quickly with Austin Mueller (IUPUI) hitting an RBI- double.
Then, with the bases loaded, the Generals walked Paul Giacomazzi (Rhodes College) to bring the Tom Sox to within a run. Trailing 3-2, Cayman Richardson (UVA) hit a sac fly to right field bringing Mueller home to tie it up going into the third inning.
Richardson led Charlottesville with three RBI’s on the night.
In the top of the fourth inning the Waynesboro offenses struck again, tacking on three more runs to make it 6-3 Generals.
Jacob Haney (William & Mary) hit the mound for the Tom Sox after the third inning of play. Haney allowed zero hits and held the opponent scoreless for his the third straight outing. James Ingram (Johns Hopkins) and Trey McDyre (Liberty) made their first relief appearances on the mound this summer to finish up the night.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Generals blasted a three-run homer along with another run to extend the lead to 10-3 going into the eighth. The Tom Sox added a run in the ninth inning but it was not enough, as the Generals closed the game at 10-4.
The Charlottesville Tom Sox will look to bounce back against on July 24th in Covington at 7:00 p.m.
