TOM SOX HIT TWO HOME RUNS, DEFEAT LUMBERJACKS 9-4 TO TAKE 1-0 SERIES LEAD

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Charlottesville Tom Sox entered the first playoff game as the #2 seed in the VBL South division, taking on the 3rd-seeded Covington Lumberjacks. They looked like a #1 seed, however, after a dominant 9-4 win over the ‘Jacks.

The first sign of action came from the Lumberjacks, bringing home a quick two runs in the top of the first in order to set themselves up for success. The Tom Sox were able to match this energy in the bottom of the second, however, as Dan Harwood (Wooster) hit a home run to center field and brought himself and Austin Mueller (IUP) home. The home run put Harwood into the team lead for long bombs with four.

The first postseason game really heated up for the Tom Sox when they scored four runs in the third inning. Cayman Richardson (Virginia) started the action-packed inning with a leadoff triple, then Trey McDyre (Liberty) came in with an RBI single and sent the Charlottesville into the lead. The ‘Sox were not done yet, however, as Christian Hlinka (Virginia) hit an RBI double and Mueller followed with a 2-run home run to make the score 6-2 through three innings.

The fourth and fifth innings were quiet for the ‘Sox other than a pitching change. Jaspar Carmichael (Johns Hopkins) retired from the mound after pitching 3.2 innings, the second and third frames being scoreless. Jacob Haney (William & Mary) came into the game near the end of the fourth to relieve Carmichael and was on fire from the start. Haney posted four strikeouts to go along with 4⅓ scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. The Lumberjacks snuck in solo home runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to make it a 6-4 game.

The eighth inning is where the Tom Sox grew their lead to a 5-run difference. Alex Fedje-Johnson (Davidson) got things started with a single, then Josh Simon (VCU) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Thomas Francisco was intentionally walked to load the bases, putting Trey McDyre up to bat. McDyre hit an RBI sac fly to right to score Fedje-Johnson, then Hlinka came in with his second RBI of the night to score Paul Giacomazzi (Rhodes), who pinch ran for Simon.

The ‘Sox are back in action for game 2 of the series in Covington on Monday night (7/29). An if-necessary game 3will be played at C-VILLE Weekly Ballpark Tuesday (7/30) if the ‘Jacks are victorious in Covington.
