The Charlottesville Tom Sox dropped a 6-5 decision to the Covington Lumberjacks on Saturday night. The one-run loss marked Charlottesville’s fourth defeat in as many games.
The game featured Kirby McMullen’s (Florida) 2019 debut as well as Cameron Turley (Georgia Tech) making his first start for the Tom Sox.
Both offenses came out strong scoring two runs each in the first inning. The Tom Sox offense had a pair of RBI-doubles coming from Walker Imwalle (Davidson) and Kevin Madden (Virginia Tech) to tie the game at two a piece at the end of the first inning. Madden extended his on-base streak to 11 games.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Tom Sox took the lead of the sacrifice fly from Trey McDyre (Liberty) to make it 3-2 going heading into the fifth inning. The Lumberjacks scored in the seventh inning to tie it up at three, but it would be short lived. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Gregory Ryan Jr (Pittsburgh) hi his first home run of the summer giving the Tom Sox the 4-3 lead.
Carden Mellown (Huntingdon) gave up two runs in the top of the first, but he wrapped up his time on the mound with three scoreless innings. Jack Friedman (Georgia Tech) entered the game in the top of the fifth, and allowed just one two innings pitched. Brian Owens (CNU) pitched the seventh inning for the Tom Sox.
Tom Sox held the lead for majority of the game, but the Lumberjacks rallied in the ninth inning with a three-RBI double from Logan Amiss (VCU), who worked his way from a 0-2 count. The rally brought the score to 6-4 Lumberjacks going into the bottom of the ninth inning. The Tom Sox fell short in their attempt to answer the rally as they left three runners stranded in the bottom of the frame.
The Tom Sox will be at home again tomorrow afternoon against Purcellville with a special Father’s Day 3:00 PM start.
