CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Charlottesville Tom Sox defeated the Covington Lumberjacks by a score of 4-3 at C-VILLE Weekly Ballpark on Friday night.
Charlottesville struck first to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning off of an RBI single by Christian Hlinka (Virginia) scored Dan Harwood (Wooster).
Joe Sprake (Elon) got the start on the mound for the Tom Sox and gave them three innings of scoreless work.
Covington tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning off of an RBI single.
The Tom Sox responded with two runs of their own to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning after an RBI single by Alex Fedje-Johnson (Davidson) scored Devin Warner (Auburn), and an RBI groundout scored Ramon Garza (Cornell).
The Lumberjacks then tied the game up again at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning after a pair of throwing errors by Charlottesville and an RBI groundout.
Charlottesville reclaimed the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning after an RBI double by Thomas Francisco (East Carolina) scored Cayman Richardson (Virginia).
Two pitchers made their debuts for the Tom Sox out of the bullpen on the night. Peyton Glavine (Auburn) and Matthew Dillard (Johns Hopkins) both did not give up a run. Glavine pitched two innings, and Dillard pitched one inning.
Alaska Abney (Coastal Carolina) came on to close the game for Charlottesville and pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The Tom Sox host the Winchester Royals Saturday night with first pitch at 7 PM. Cosmo the Sheepdog will be returning to C-VILLE Weekly Ballpark for the game.
