CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va – The Charlottesville Tom Sox jumped out to an early lead and using a big eighth inning to polish off a 9-2 triumph over defending VBL Champion New Market on Sunday afternoon.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Tom Sox started their offense with three runs in the bottom of the second. Dan Harwood (Wooster) hit a double to center field, bringing in Trey McDyre (Liberty) for the first run of the day. Moments later, Gregory Ryan Jr. (Pittsburgh) hit his first triple of the season, bringing in Cole McNamee (Wake Forest), who was celebrating his birthday, as well as Harwood.
After a disappointing outing in Staunton on Saturday, the pitching staff showed up with a chip on their shoulder on Sunday. Michael Zubovich (Randolph-Macon), who also celebrating his birthday, started on the mound and set the tone for the game with seven strikeouts and just four hits through four innings. Oluwasayo Kintunde (Towson) entered the game in the top of the fifth and held the Rebels scoreless through the next three innings. Antonio Balducci (Richmond) closed the day out for the Tom Sox, throwing two scoreless innings.
The Tom Sox put up five runs in the eighth inning to pull ahead 9-2. Harwood brought in his second runner of the game, and Ryan added a double to his two-hit night, bringing in two more to bring his total to four RBIs on the day. Harwood then scored off a sac fly from Cameron Turley (Georgia Tech) before Ryan scored the final run of the day off a wild pitch.a
The Tom Sox will be back in action Tuesday at home for a 7 P.M. game against Staunton.
