CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA- After a few rain delays and the threat of storms in the area, the Charlottesville Tom Sox defeated the Strasburg Express in 8-3 on Monday night. Thomas Francisco (East Carolina) extended his hit-streak to 23 games and Trey McDyre (Liberty) blasted out a home run in a second consecutive game.
Carden Mellown (Huntingdon) got the night started on the mound for the Tom Sox and held the Express scoreless through five innings. He struck out four batters and only gave up two hits in his best showing of the summer to date.
The Tom Sox carried Mellown’s momentum to the plate and got their offense going early. Christian Hlinka (Virginia) started off his big night with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first, which brought in Ramon Garza (Cornell) and Francisco.
After several scoreless inning for both teams, McDyre launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, which doubled Charlottesville’s lead. The Express responded with their first run of the night with a single from Zachary Scott in the top of the 6th to trim the deficit to 4-1.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, Hlinka notched his third RBI of the night to give the Tom Sox a four-run advantage.
The Express battled in the top of the 8th to bring in two runs off a single by Tyler Johnson and a sacrifice bunt from Scott. It was their only inning with multiple runs on the night.
Looking to add some cushion on the scoreboard, the Tom Sox driving in three runs in the bottom of the 8th. Garza picked up his first RBI of the night with a double to score Cayman Richardson (Virginia) and Austin Mueller (Indiana University of Pennsylvania). Francisco also added to his stellar night with an RBI-single to right field, which brought in Garza.
Francisco and Hlinka both finished the night with three hits. Hlinka also tallied three RBI’s while McDyre and Garza had two each.
The Tom Sox will be back in action tomorrow at Waynesboro for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.
