TOM SOX LOSE THIRD STRAIGHT, FALL 8-5 TO STAUNTON BRAVES
The Staunton Braves (9-3, 5-3 South) scored six runs in the third inning to defeat the Charlottesville Tom Sox (6-4, 4-3 South) 8-5 on Friday night (June 14).
Charlottesville got the scoring started in the 3rd, aided by a pair of errors the left side of the Staunton infield. Ramon Garza (Cornell) reached off an error by the shortstop and following a Dan Harwood (Wooster) single which moved him to third, scored off a Cole McNamee (Wake Forest). hit which was bobbled by the third baseman. A pair of walks from Staunton starter Jaily Paredes continued the rally for Charlottesville, as Kevin Madden (Virginia Tech), Brock Edge (Florida), and Luke Coker (Elon) reached via the base on balls. Edge and Coker’s walks both came with the bases loaded, scoring Harwood and McNamee, respectively. However, Gabe Sotres (Michigan State) struck out to end the frame, leaving the bases loaded. The Tom Sox left the bases loaded in three of their nine innings.
Staunton, however, came out firing in the bottom of the frame, scoring six runs on six hits off of Charlottesville starter David Yourke (Wofford). The Staunton effort was aided by a trio of consecutive extra-base hits, as the Braves went double-double-home run to knock in all six runs. Of the 43 RBIs Charlottesville opponents have collected this season, over half (23) of them have come off of extra-base hits.
The Tom Sox fought back in the 6th, once again capitalizing on Staunton walks to score a pair. Dan Harwood lined out to left to score Luke Coker, who got on base via the walk, and Cole McNamee hit an RBI single to score Josh Simon (VCU) who got on via the base on balls.
Antonio Balducci (Richmond) ended his chance of a 0.00 ERA in the 7th, allowing a run via a Logan Worley double which scored Braves slugger Devon Adams. Adams and Worley led the attack for the Braves, going a combined 5-for-9 with six of the team’s eight RBI and scoring three runs.
The Braves tacked on one more in the 8th off of Coastal Carolina reliever Alaska Abney when Adams singled to bring in VBL-runs leader Eli Davis.
The Tom Sox return home for a pair of games over the weekend, taking on Covington Saturday at 7pm then Purcellville Sunday for Father’s Day at 3pm.
- Kevin Madden stretched his reached-base streak to all 10 games on the season, the only player to have accomplished the feat. Dan Harwood and Cayman Richardson join Madden as the only players to have reached base in every game since the first.
- The Tom Sox shut down Staunton slugger and VBL-RBI leader Andrew Czech, punching him out in three of his four at-bats and not allowing a hit or an RBI to the Braves first baseman.
