NEW MARKET, Va. – The Tom Sox held off a late rally on Wednesday night to earn their second-ever win in New Market with a 6-4 win against the Rebels.
Charlottesville was led on the mound by stout performances from starter Maddison Furman and reliever Kirby McMullen. Furman pitched four complete innings, allowing just one run and striking out four. McMullen then took over, pitching three innings and allowing one run along with three strikeouts. McMullen’s impact wasn’t just limited to the pitcher’s mound, as he kicked off Charlottesville’s six run performance with a three-run homer in the top of the third.
The Rebels struck back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.
The Tom Sox then tacked on three straight runs over the next three innings thanks to a single from McMullen, a solo homer from Dan Harwood, and a single from recent addition Thomas Francisco. The Rebels were only able to respond with a single run in the fifth.
New Market was able to pick up steam in the bottom of the eighth thanks to several errors, notching two runs and cutting the Charlottesville lead to just a pair. However, a clutch five-strikeout performance on the mound from Alaska Abney quickly quieted the Rebels and secured the third consecutive win for the Tom Sox.
The Tom Sox take the field again Thursday night at C-VILLE Weekly Ballpark against the Strasburg Express. The first pitch is slated for 7:00.
