The Charlottesville Tom Sox (9-6) prevailed against the Waynesboro Generals (9-6) 2-1 in 10 innings on Friday night. Great pitching was one of the main storylines in Friday’s game, with each team only one run until the 10th inning.
The debuting Thomas Francisco (ECU) hit the winning RBI single to bring home Kirby McMullen (Florida) in the top of the 10th. Francisco went 3-5 from the plate in his inaugural game in a Tom Sox uniform.
After the slow start for both teams, Dan Harwood (Wooster) brought in the first run of the game for either team in the top of the fourth. Harwood’s RBI single brought in Trey McDyre (Liberty) to make the score 1-0.
The Tom Sox collected five hits over the following four innings but could not turn any of them into runs. The Generals, on the other hand, went seven innings until Santiago Garcia (Alabama State) launched one over the fence to tie the game at 1-1.
Devin Hemenway (Florida) started on the mound for the Tom Sox, pitching for four innings while only allowing two hits. David Yourke (Wofford) then pitched for two innings, also only allowing only two runs.
Alaska Abney (Coastal Carolina) stepped in to wrap up the game for the Tom Sox. Abney struck out one batter, and the Tom Sox used some clutch defense in the bottom of the 10th to close out the Generals.
The Charlottesville Tom Sox will be back in action on June 22nd at Staunton for a 7:30 PM start. The Tom Sox will be returning home on the 23rd to face the New Market Rebels in another 3:00 P.M special.
