CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In front of 2,247 fans, the Waynesboro Generals defeated the Charlottesville Tom Sox by a score of 7-6. The Tom Sox move to 0-4 in organization history playing on the Fourth of July.
Waynesboro struck first in the top of the first inning after scoring two runs to take a 2-0 lead.
Charlottesville responded quickly, scoring four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. Thomas Francisco (East Carolina) started the scoring for the Tom Sox with an RBI single that extended his hit streak to 11 games. Trey McDyre (Liberty) had an RBI single as well, which scored Francisco to tie the game at 2-2. Christian Hlinka (Virginia) gave the Tom Sox the 4-2 lead with a 2-run home run.
The Tom Sox extended their lead to 6-2 over the next two innings off of another Francisco RBI single in the second inning and an RBI double by Dan Harwood (Wooster) in the third inning.
Devin Hemenway (Florida) settled in on the mound for Charlottesville after the first inning and pitched three consecutive scoreless innings.
Waynesboro scored five runs over the final five innings of play to take a 7-6 lead. The winning run for the Generals came via a walk with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.
Charlottesville looks to bounce back Friday night at home against the Staunton Braves. First pitch is at 7 PM at C-VILLE Weekly Ballpark.
