Recap

BY TYLER FANNIN

The Charlottesville Tom Sox (8-5) fell to the Winchester Royals (5-7) 8-5 despite their late rally in which they had the tying run 90 feet from home plate in the bottom of the eighth.

Charlottesville nearly tied the game in the the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Royals survived thanks to some strong defense and some timely insurance runs.

Trey McDyre (Liberty) ripped a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning to give the Tom Sox an early 3-0 lead lead. The Royals fired right back with a two-run homer to take the lead in the third inning 3-2. Winchester would tack on another run in the fourth to double its advantage

In the top of the fifth inning, Winchester’s Jeremiah Boyd (Presbyterian) launched a home run to center field to make it 5-2 Royals. Cole McNamee (Wake Forest) later responded with an RBI Double to cut the Winchester lead just to two runs.

Pinch hitter Christian Hlinka (Virginia) got the offense back on track getting on base late in the eighth inning.

McDyre followed up Hinka’s one-out single with a base hit of his own. Dan Harwood (Wooster) then hit an RBI double to make the score 6-4. Gregory Ryan Jr (Pittsburgh) quickly followed it up with an RBI sacrifice to cut the Royals lead to just one run going into the ninth inning.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Royals tacked on two runs to extend their lead to 8-5. Despite the late offensive efforts from the Tom Sox, Winchester’s insurance runs were too much to make up late in the ninth inning.

Maddison Furman (VCU) started on the mound for the Tom Sox. He pitched through three and a half innings until Kirby McMullen (Florida) entered the contest in the fourth inning. McMullen pitched two and a half innings, giving up one run to the Royals. Antonio Balducci (Richmond) stepped in for one inning, giving up zero runs and zero hits until Walker Imwalle (Davidson) replaced him in the eighth inning.

The Charlottesville Tom Sox will be back in action on June 21 at 7:00 P.M at Waynesboro. The Tom Sox will return home on June 23rd for another 3:00 P.M. special against the New Market Rebels.
