Recap

By Libby Davidson

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va– The Tom Sox fell to the Woodstock River Bandits at home Monday 10-5, losing for the first time since 2016 to snap an eight-game winning streak.

The game got off to a quick start with an action-packed first inning. The River Bandits came out hot with two runs in the top of the inning, but the Tom Sox fired back with three in the bottom of the frame to bring the score to 3-2. Thomas Francisco’s (East Carolina) RBI single got the ball rolling for the Tom Sox. Francisco secured a stolen base, then Dan Harwood (Wooster) walked to load the bases with runners on second and third with only one out. To round out the inning, Christian Hlinka (Virginia) hit a sac fly to score Francisco.

It was a great night on the mound for Covenant School Alumni Jacob Haney (William & Mary) and Luke Burton (Davidson). Haney kept the action of the first inning alive and held the River Bandits scoreless in the second. Burton had an impressive night as he got the team out of a jam and stranded two on base in the seventh. Additionally, he held the River Bandits scoreless for two consecutive innings.

The River Bandits scored on a bunt single in the top of the fourth, then extended their lead on a throwing error to tie up the game at 3-3. They tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 5-3.

Woodstock had a productive sixth inning from the plate, scoring five more runs and producing a 10-3 advantage.

After six tough innings for the Tom Sox, they brought back some energy in the bottom of the seventh. Devin Warner’s (Auburn) double put runners on second and third. Francisco’s sac fly scored Kirby McMullen (Florida), and Trey McDyre (Liberty) followed that up with an RBI double to lessen the River Bandits’ lead to 10-5.

Walker Imwalle (Davidson) hit the mound in the top of the ninth, and retired three of the four batters he faced.

The Tom Sox hit the road tomorrow (July 2nd) against the Harrisonburg Turks and return home for three straight days, beginning Wednesday (July 3rd) against Strasburg.
