Tom Sox Use Strong Seventh Inning to Get Past Woodstock

By: Zach Hamilton

Tom Sox get past the Woodstock River Bandits on a strong top of the seventh inning in a 4-1 ballgame. Charlottesville wins their third straight game as Dom D’Alessandro came through with the big, two out, 2 RBI-double that brought home the winning runs for the Tom Sox. Jack Barry drove in the run in the first and the fourth run of the ballgame in the seventh inning for Charlottesville. Kyle Nicolas provided a strong start for Charlottesville and the bullpen came through in the late innings to lock up the victory. Both teams left the bases loaded in early inning and struggled to find hits on the night.

Shortstop Max Bazin led off the ballgame for Charlottesville with a line drive single to left. After reaching on a fielder’s choice that erased Bazin from the base paths, Patrick McColl scored the ballgame’s first run following back-to-back walks and a hit by pitch taken by Jack Barry. Charlottesville was still threatening in the first inning with the bases load but an Anthony Lazar strikeout ended the side. From the time, Nicolas walked on the mound, his team had already given him the lead and he never relinquished it. The River Bandits went down in order in the first two innings at the hands of Nicolas and the Tom Sox. In the bottom of the third inning, Woodstock had the bases loaded with one out. However, the River Bandits were unable to get the timely hit and came up empty handed.

Nicolas returned to the mound for the fourth inning and worked around two, back-to-back singles to end the inning and his night. The Ball State Cardinal ended his outing with six strikeouts and three hits over the four innings. Cameron Weinberger made his first appearance of the summer in relief of Nicolas for the Tom Sox. However, the River Bandits wasted no time in the bottom of the fifth as leadoff hitter Riley Branvold walked and then stole second base with no outs. Branvold then advanced to third on a fly-out by Connor Wilson and later scored on a passed ball that got by Will Allocca to make it a 1-1 game. Woodstock added two more singles in the inning but Weinberger was able to get Austin Adams to ground out into a double play to end the inning.

The River Bandits kept the pressure on Weinberger in the sixth inning with a leadoff walk and a hit-and-run single by Ramon Garza. However, the right-hander was able to fire two of his three strikeouts on the night to get out of the jam. Charlottesville was able to find the offense in the top of the seventh inning. Centerfielder Jack Morris laid down a bunt single to spark the rally for the Tom Sox with one out. Designated Hitter Patrick McColl followed suit with a single to right field. Dom D’Alessandro stepped to the plate and changed the ballgame with one swing of his bat. A crushed double to left field off the bat of D’Alessandro brought home both Morris and McColl to give Charlottesville a 3-1 advantage. Third baseman, Jack Barry, doubled to left later in the inning to score D’Alessandro and make it a 4-1 lead for the Tom Sox.

After jumping out the three-run lead, the River Bandits only reached base twice over the last three innings on two walks. Harvard’s John MacLean (1) came in for the eighth and ninth innings for Charlottesville and picked up his first save of the summer. Cameron Weinberger (1-0) picked up the win in his first appearance of the summer, while Woodstock’s Clayton Jeffries (0-1) took the loss. The Tom Sox will head back home to C-Ville Weekly Ballpark in Charlottesville to host the Strasburg Express on Thursday night at 7pm in a rematch of the 2017 Valley Baseball League Championship. Meanwhile, Woodstock will hit the road and travel south to Staunton for a 7:30pm start against the Braves on Thursday night.
