CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Despite tying the game in the ninth inning, the Charlottesville Tom Sox fell short against the Front Royal Cardinals, 5-4 on Tuesday night. The Cardinals hit a walk-off single to seal the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Front Royal offense came out hot in the first two innings, scoring four runs. To compliment the quick start, the Cardinal defense was on fire, with four double plays through the first six innings.
The Tom Sox (6-2) finally got a spark of offense in the top of the sixth. Kevin Madden (Virginia Tech) singled, and thanks to a Front Royal error, Cayman Richardson (Virginia) and Walker Imwalle (Davidson) crossed the plate to trim the Cardinals’ lead in half.
Following Madden’s big-hit, Gregory Ryan (Pittsburgh) recorded an RBI single to bring home Madden and cut the Front Royal lead to 4-3.
Ryan later scored the tying run in the top of the ninth, before the Cardinals walked off in the bottom of the frame.
Ramon Garza (Cornell) continued his seven-game hit streak in Tuesday’s loss. Richardson and Madden each finished with two hits on the night. As a team, the Tom Sox out-hit the Cardinals 9-7
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Joseph Sprake (Elon) relieved starter Jacob Haney (William & Mary) and allowed just two hits and zero runs, while striking out five batters in four innings pitched. Following a rough second inning, the Charlottesville defense held the Cardinals scoreless through the next six innings.
The Tom Sox will be back in action on Wednesday night in New Market at 7:30 p.m for the second consecutive road game. Charlottesville will return home on Thursday night to face the Waynesboro Generals at C-VILLE Weekly Ballpark.
