CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Charlottesville Tom Sox dominated the Staunton Braves, 10-2 to clinch the South Division Pennant in the third consecutive season.
The Tom Sox struck first with a two-run home run from Thomas Francisco (East Carolina) in the bottom of the first, bringing in Paul Giacomazzi (Rhodes). Giaccomazzi then brought in a run of his own, scoring Alex Fedje-Johnson (Davidson) in the second after being walked with bases loaded. Fedje-Johnson’s college teammate Parker Nolan (Davidson) came home following a fielder’s-choice that putout Francisco.
Giacomazzi and Christian Hlinka (Virginia) brought in a run each with singles in the bottom of the fourth. Francisco was able to sneak in to put the ‘Sox up 7-0 after two Braves players collided following a throw off a single from Dan Harwood (Wooster). The ECU product finished the night with three RBI, two hits, and a pair of runs scored.
Nolan notched two hits and scored two runs in the win.
Joe Sprake (Elon) started on the mound for the Tom Sox striking out six batters in 4.2 innings. He allowed just two hits and one earned run (one unearned) before Ethan Sund (North Park) checked into the game. Sund continued the dominant effort, striking out four in three innings and holding the Braves to just two hits.
Trey McDyre (Liberty) kept the momentum going in the bottom of the fifth with a single to score James Ingram (Johns Hopkins). Brock Edge (Florida) delivered the final blow of the night with a Home Run blasted to right field to score the 10th and final run of the night.
The Tom Sox will travel to VBL North Division Champion, Strasburg to face the Express tomorrow at 7PM in game one of the VBL Championship Series. The Tom Sox are looking to claim their second Jim Lineweaver trophy in three seasons.
